In Her Own Words: Nicola Robinson

In Her Own Words is an interview series giving petite women a platform to share their stories courageously. In our first edition, we spoke to Gold Coast based brand and web designer, Nicola Robinson from Nicola Jane Creative.

Your wardrobe essentials:

I would say I am the most drawn to elevated basics. Beautiful neutral pieces that I know I will wear on repeat for years.

Your typical morning routine:

My day usually starts at 6:30am with lots of snuggles from my five-month-old pup before we go for a walk along the water. I make a nutritious breakfast and an iced long black coffee, and take my daily supplements to start my day feeling good. Then I go into my studio and do 10 to 15 minutes of journaling before starting the work day.

Your inspirations:

I start every project with a moodboard, made up of all sorts of images that inspire me. Usually it will include things like art, interior design, photography, textures, clothing, typography—just about anything that catches my eye.

A song you have on repeat:

Not one song in particular, but SZA’s SOS album is on repeat at the moment.

A time you felt bold:

Definitely when I left my 9-to-5 job to work for myself. When I think about it now, I’m still shocked I actually took that leap. I was only 21 years old at the time and am naturally a very anxious person with no business experience, but I just had this feeling that it was what I was supposed to do. I trusted my gut and it ended up being the best decision I’ve ever made.

A moment you felt vulnerable:

I still feel vulnerable every time I share my work online. I am a very sensitive person so there's always that little bit of anxiety and vulnerability that lingers wondering what other people are going to think.

Advice to your younger self:

I would say to trust and believe in myself more. Don’t worry about what others are doing, just be confident in your own creativity.

Your favourite spot on the Gold Coast:

The first place I lived when I moved here was Nobby Beach, so it’s got a special place in my heart.

What success means to you:

Success to me is doing what I love every day and calling it my job, feeling content with my life, and being surrounded by people who make me happy.
